MASTER CLASSES | Tom Afiyan-English (GBR)

Tom is an established lecturer, dance scientist and artistic director from the UK. He is the founder of Ferus Animi // Terra Nova, a movement research collective based in Europe, and has previously worked as an associate director with immersive theatre company Punchdrunk, as well as collaborating as a performer with the likes of Wim Vandekeybus/Ultima Vez, AΦE, English National Ballet, Joe Wright/Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui and Alexandra Reynolds, in addition to working as a movement consultant for Warner Bros. Pictures, Universal Pictures and Working Title Films.

He is an alumnus of Rambert, London Contemporary Dance School (BA Hons) and Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance (MSc Dance Science). Additionally Tom holds academic certifications in Neuroscience and Sports Performance from Barça Universitas. He designed and is currently the Course Leader on the new MA Dance: Performance programme at London Contemporary Dance School.

Master classes

Performers will explore the principles of movement and performance inspired by his ferus animi // terra nova methodology. A veritable daily form of mobilization, participants will be exposed to movement deployed for health, athleticism and longevity. The class will unfold around solo and group improvisation to explore creativity, imagination and visualization. Partner games, sometimes collaborative, sometimes competitive, will highlight weak points in their movements. The class will draw on the science of performance psychology, evolutionary physiology, behavioral neuroscience and functional biomechanics. In an open and motivating learning environment, participants will be able to deal with a daily dose of functional failure, while resolving them through research and their own instincts.
