The master class is a comprehensive introduction to Tero Saarinen’s movement technique. It consists of an in-depth exploration of the holistic philosophy behind Saarinen’s style, including repertoire exercises featuring material from his recent creations. His techniques stem from awakening the senses, recognising the weight of one’s body and hence maximising the use of both balance and off-balance. Saarinen’s distinctive style fuses elements from his backgrounds in ballet, contemporary dance and a wide range of Asian traditions. The aim of the workshop is to activate every cell and nerve ending in the body, to become fully Aware, Alert and Attentive – 360 degrees present, resonating and alive. The goal is to make full use of each dancer’s technical knowledge and explore, liberate and further nourish the potential of each individual.
Tero Saarinen has had a distinguished international career both as a dancer and a choreographer, with more than 40 creations for Tero Saarinen Company and for other prominent dance groups. His work was featured in the repertoires of Batsheva Dance Comapany, National Dance Company of Korea, the Gothenburg Opera Ballet, Lorraine and Marseille, and many others. His key works for Tero Saarinen Company include the company’s international breakthrough Westward Ho! (1996), Saarinen’s Stravinsky reinterpretations Petrushka (2001) and HUNT (2002), Shakers-inspired Borrowed Light (2004), Morphed (2014) and most recently Jean Sibelius’ Kullervo (2015), in collaboration with the Finnish National Opera and Ballet. As a choreographer, Saarinen is known for his unique movement language, ‘an inventive mixture of grotesqueness and beauty’ that plays with balance and off-balance.
